 Die
Werkswinkel is the largest project being run by the Knysna Association for the
Physically Disabled.
This is a protective workspace, The Workshop. An unheated set of timber
buildings in Hornlee where up to 45 disabled people apply the talents they have,
to support 323 family members. They offer the disabled crafters skills in
various mediums such as candle making, leatherwork, beading, textile stenciling,
sewing, woodwork, furniture restoration and card making. They are paid a small
wage which supplements their disability grant. Crafters are collected from home
and cared for while working at the facility.
There are no entry fee to the facility but visitors are encouraged to buy
from the goods on display.
Outlets: The items made are sold at The Rotary Stall in Templeman Square and
the income generated acts as a vital resource for the purchase of new materials
and fabric and helps to pay their wages. The workshop also undertakes small
contracts such as carpentry and sewing (denim aprons) for saw millers.
The pathetic amount of money received as a grant from The Department of
Social Affairs, does not even cover the rent.
