About a quarter of the population is
unemployed and lives on less than US $1.25 a day.

Aids
- At the end of 2009, there were
approximately 6.7 million people living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa, and
almost 1,300 AIDS deaths occurring every day. Statistics show that almost one to
five adults are infected and the country is heading for a Aids Orphan Crisis of
unimaginable proportions.
Literacy -
Nearly five million people in South Africa are totally
illiterate, Education Minister Naledi Pandor said on Monday.
Another 4,9 million South Africans were functionally illiterate - people who had
dropped out of school before Grade Seven.
Homeless

40 to 70% of the African
Population lives in slums. These children live in the worst imaginable
conditions - in overcrowded shacks with dirt floors and no running water or
electricity. They play in alleyways covered with sewage and trash. Their parents
are often too poor or too ill to keep them fed.
